Mr. Liu Jiayi, Auditor General of P. R. China, accepts a United Nations Peace Prize at the UN headquarters in New York, NY on July 24, 2013. He was awarded the prize in recognition of his auditing work for UN peace-keeping operations.
China was elected a member of the United Nations Board of Auditors in 2007, and began assuming responsibilities of auditing UN entities and missions and acting as the lead auditor of peacekeeping operations from 2008. Chinese auditors have carried out field audit of the UN Peacekeeping Operations Headquarters and more than 10 peacekeeping missions, many of which were based in regions known for restive situations and harsh conditions, including Darfur and South Sudan. China's auditing work for the UN has been widely hailed over the past five years.
This is the first time the UN awards the peace prize. Ms. Ameerah Haq, Head of the UN department of field support, praised Mr. Liu and his office for their efforts in supporting UN peace-keeping operations and maintaining world peace.
Mr. Liu said the prize was not only an honor for him and his team, but a recognition of China's role in maintaining world peace and promoting common development for countries around the world.
